Minnesota Governor Tim Walz says the state is taking a step in deconstructing systemic racism.

“The Minnesota Department of Human Rights is filing a commissioner’s charge of discrimination,” said Walz. “It will launch a civil rights investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department. The investigation will review MPD’s policies, practices, and procedures over the last ten years to see if the department has utilized systemic, discriminatory practices towards people of color.”

Department of Human Rights Commissioner Rebecca Lucero says this step goes beyond the George Floyd case.

“That’s why this investigation is important,” said Lucero. ” This is not like the other investigations, which are critically important, this is looking at system change.”

Walz says the investigation is important because protestors told him they’re sick of just words, they’re ready for some action.
