The Walz administration is using the story of a supposedly illicit graduation ceremony to demonstrate why large gatherings are still prohibited in the state. Kris Ehresmann with the State Health Department says they confirmed someone involved in setting up the event turned out to be infected with COVID-19.

“While the ill individual did not participate in the ceremony itself, the two individuals with whom they had contact, did facilitate the ceremony. And the ceremony did involve individuals walking up to receive their diploma.”

Ehresmann did not provide more details of the event, except to say it occur ed in Minnesota. She stressed no matter the size of the space, or if it is held indoors or outdoors, graduations are not considered safe and are not permitted.

Ehresmann says the guidance on graduations remains simple.

“Indoor graduations and ceremonies held in outside stadiums and football fields of any size are not considered safe and are not permitted.”
