State lawmakers are heading into a likely special session optimistic that a deal can be reached on a statewide public works project bill.

“There’s so many jobs that will be created when we do pass the bonding bill. it’s my hope that we’ll be able to find a way to get the HOuse GOP on board to get that bill through in June.”

House Speaker Melissa Hortman. On the Senate side, Majority Leader Paul Gazelka says challenges remain…

“I think all four sides are committed, it’s a difficult process, add COVID and Zoom and not being able to get together with each other makes it extremely difficult.”

The bill stalled in the regular session after failing to get the required majority votes in the House and Senate. House Republicans have said a bonding bill is not possible unless Governor Walz relinquishes his COVID-19 emergency powers. As of now, that appears likely to remain a sticking point in a possible special session.
