State Senate Republican Majority Leader Paul Gazelka has a suggestion for Governor Tim Walz to ease pork-processing plant shutdowns caused by hundreds of employees testing positive for COVID-19:

“We need to consider getting the National Guard, for example, to come in and help fill in those spots, because that food supply chain is critical across the country and we need to keep that supply chain going.”

Gazelka says the governor “really gets the credit” for pushing COVID testing farther and faster. The processing plant shutdowns are causing many thousands of hogs to be euthanized rather than sent to the market, and analysts predict shortages on supermarket shelves.
