For the first time in its 44-year history, Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth is cancelled — events scheduled for June 19th and 20th, called off due to COVID-19. Kristi Stokes, president of the Duluth Greater Downtown Council, says she knows it was a difficult decision, “but it had to be done and it’s heartbreaking”:
“It will have a significant impact. I mean, Grandma’s has always signaled the start of the summer tourist season for Duluth, and so this is something that will be felt far and wide — not just in downtown Duluth but throughout our area.”
Grandma’s Marathon Executive Director Shane Bauer says it wasn’t possible to reschedule for a later date. Organizers are setting up a virtual race and offering discounts for 2021.
