Faced with a shortage of kits, the state is restricting tests for COVID-19 to hospital patients, health care workers and residents of long-term care facilities. Kris Ehresmann with the state Health Department says Governor Tim Walz last week asked Vice President Mike Pence to increase the number of lab tests available to health care providers:
“In absence of receiving that, we are making decisions about testing based on the capacity that we have.”
Ehresmann argues given the situation, reserving tests for the sickest people is the right thing to do. Minnesota has 60 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Ehresmann says that’s probably an undercount and things could get worse.
