As a part of Heart Disease Awareness month healthcare advocates are using this Saturday to shine a light on heart valve disease, a condition that affects 11 million Americans. Lindsay Clarke with the Alliance for Aging Research says people don’t know much about H-V-D, but learning more starts with simply asking your doctor to listen to your heart.

“Doctors are aware of heart valve disease obviously, but we need to make sure we are having our hearts listened to regularly. We need to be advocates for our health, so if they aren’t listening, that we ask them to.”

Clarke says older adults are the most likely to experience H-V-D. Symptoms can often be discounted as part of the aging process, so she says it is even more important to always talk to your doctor about any changes you may experience in your body.
