The new legislative session gets underway today (TUE) and the group Moms Demand Action will be on hand to greet lawmakers and make a plea for what it calls “common sense” gun safety laws.

“More than 400 people are shot and killed in Minnesota every year, and hundreds more are injured, and in our Republican-controlled Senate, they have failed to meaningfully address gun violence.”

Spokeswoman Sarah Mikesell says Minnesota voters support stronger gun safety laws by a 5 to 1 margin. Republican leaders say they’re willing to consider more mental health resources this session–but they contend that two of the key proposals touted by Democratic lawmakers–“red flag” laws and background checks–won’t reduce shooting deaths.
