A proposal to use a local option sales tax to help fund a fire hall in St. Peter will be on the agenda at next week’s St. Peter City Council meeting. The issue of how to fund the proposed new fire hall was discussed in a council work session Tuesday night. City manager Todd Prafke says the council held a good philosophical discussion on whether the cost of the facility should be all on property tax owners or should sales tax be a part of the structure. Prafke says if the council gives the go-ahead, the next step would be legislative approval for the local option sales tax. He says if both the council and the legislature approve the matter, the issue will go before voters in November. Prafke says the city is considering a half to three-quarter cent sales tax.
