Nicollet County Environmental Health will be giving away free short-term Radon testing kits beginning Thursday. Jesse Harmon is the Environmental Health Director in Nicollet County.

“Kits can be picked up at our office at 622 South Front Street in St.Peter,” said Harmon. “We do recommend people call first to make sure they’re still available because they do go quickly.”

Harmon says 200 kits will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. He says radon naturally occurs in Minnesota’s geology.

“Two in five homes in Minnesota have levels that would pose a health risk,” said Harmon. “So that’s why it’s important to have your homes tested.”

Nicollet Environmental/Community Health says radon is the leading environmental cause of deaths in the US and more than 21,000 lung cancer deaths are attributed to the element.
