The area is dealing with the first major snowstorm of the year this morning. Jacob Beitlich with the National Weather Service office in Chanhassen says the storm packed a punch.

“We were getting reports of one to two inches per hour and a few folks even reported some thunder,” said Beitlich.

Beitlich says the snow will gradually leave the area this morning but the winds will stay around most of the day.

“The winds will gradually weaken by this afternoon but gusts will stay around 20 to 25 miles per hour this afternoon and evening,” said Beitlich.

Beitlich says they’re keeping an eye on another system that could affect travel this weekend.
