Playground design and location for outdoor fitness course has been selected for Highland Park, 950 Warren Street, and is expected to be installed summer 2020. Citizen input helped determine playground design and placement of outdoor fitness equipment.

The playground design features two towers connected by a skyway with climbing rings, one large slide, multiple smaller slides and a large net climber. It’s also designed to meet safety requirements and provide opportunities aligned with American Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. The fitness course will be placed along a trail in the park and includes a series of physical obstacles with three challenge levels and multiple options within each level. Outdoor fitness equipment promotes health and wellness in a city park; helps make it easy for everyone to engage in fitness; gives people an opportunity to be active at no cost and is available at their convenience.
Estimated costs for the playground equipment is $186,000 and $65,000 for the outdoor fitness equipment. A State of Minnesota grant, which requires a fitness option, will fund a portion of project costs.
The park’s current playground equipment is scheduled for replacement because of its age, condition and challenges in finding replacement parts. The installation of a new playground unit in Highland Park was identified as a 2019 project in Mankato’s Community Investment Plan as part of the parks capital replacement fund. Other park work includes adding an asphalt trail from existing trail to restroom, improvement of shelters one, two and restroom, concrete curbing to create a finished edge and volleyball net replacement.
