Former Lt. Gov. Michelle Fischbach is running for the GOP nomination to challenge Minnesota’s most senior member of Congress, Democratic U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson, in western Minnesota’s 7th District.

Fischbach was president of the Minnesota Senate before she was elevated to lieutenant governor when Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton appointed then-Lt. Gov. Tina Smith to the U.S. Senate. Fischbach resisted taking the post because it would have cost Republicans their Senate majority. She didn’t resign from the Senate and take the oath as lieutenant governor until after the 2018 legislative session.

Fischbach announced her run for Congress in a statement Monday night in which she faulted Peterson for voting against President Donald Trump on issues including a border wall.

Peterson, who chairs the House Agriculture Committee, is serving his 15th term.
