VINE Faith in Action’s Executive Director Pam Determan has been selected as one of the 50 most accomplished and inspiring Minnesotans over the age of 50.   AARP Minnesota and Pollen’s 50 Over 50 list celebrates and recognizes Minnesotans over the age of 50 who have made significant contributions and achievements in the nonprofit and for-profit sectors, in the arts and community, and in disrupting outdated beliefs about aging.  In its fourth year, 50 Over 50 aims to prove that aging doesn’t diminish an individual’s potential or value to our state and communities.

Determan was nominated by VINE member Linda Good who wrote, “Pam has been the driving force and advocate for providing services for older adults.  She is a risk-taker and visionary when she bravely took the leap to buy and renovate the current VINE building to be a center for adults.  The programs offered at VINE allow us to continue to grow in body, mind, and spirit.  The respite care services and the home-based services offer needed support.  We seniors always feel welcomed and valued at VINE.”

VINE started in 1994 as a graduate-school writing assignment that eventually led Determan to buy a five-story building for $1. She then raised several million more to transform it into an adult community center that offers educational programs, social outings and a fitness center complete with exercise classes, a warm-water pool and walking track. Thanks to Determan, VINE also has a literacy program for immigrants, respite care for those with progressive illness, transportation program, a volunteer-based support system for older adults and a wide range of activities so people can pursue their passions, no matter their age.

“It has been a privilege to see what was once only a dream come to fruition.” Determan said.  “VINE has been a labor of love for the past quarter century and it is an honor to be selected for this award.  I will be accepting it on behalf of the hundreds of individuals who have contributed to the success of the organization.”

Determan will receive her award at the 50 Over 50 Celebration on Thursday, October 17 at the McNamara Alumni Center in Minneapolis.  More information about the award and the other recipients can be found online at
