It is unknown why youth with asthma are more likely than their peers to vape. A new study shows nearly 30-percent of students in grade 6-through-12 who suffer from asthma are using a tobacco product. Sharrilyn Helgertz with the state Health Department says like traditional tobacco vape smoke also contains harmful chemicals:

“Ultrafine particles, heavy metals like nickel, tin, and lead — and other cancer-causing chemicals.”

Helgertz says youth with asthma who smoke or vape is likely to experience more intense symptoms and need more medical care.
