Bus companies across the state are struggling to hire enough drivers in time for the start of the school year. Among them Trobec’s Bus Service that serves the St. Cloud area.   Company Vice President Bethany Schubert:

“Our company is short about seven bus drivers right now. And if we don’t have them by the beginning of the school year we can’t run out routes. There’s nobody to drive them and that causes a problem.”

Schubert believes some of the trouble comes from a stigma that surrounds the position:

“When I talk to people they picture the grumpy old man is the bus driver and that’s just not accurate. You know we’ve got employees as young as 21-years-old both male and female, up to people in their 70’s and everybody in between.”

The pay range varies per company, but the average starting wage is $18 an hour for drivers.
