Law enforcement calls it “swatting.”

Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting says that’s what happened late Tues. afternoon when deputies and other officers rushed to Hawley. Dispatch received a call claiming that someone had been taken hostage at a home. Red River SWAT was activated and headed to the scene. Deputies arrived and spoke with the homeowner who allowed them to search the home, where they found nothing out of the ordinary. “Swatting” is a term used when phony 911 calls are made to emergency dispatch centers which then triggers a SWAT unit.
