Local businesses will have an opportunity to dispose of fluorescent light bulbs, ballasts and high intensity discharge (HID) lamps on Wednesday, July 31 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The collection will take place at the Blue Earth County Household Hazardous Waste Facility located at 651 Summit Avenue in Mankato.
Xcel Energy customers will receive free disposal for up to 10 light bulbs. For more than 10 bulbs and for non-Xcel Energy customers, bulbs will be collected at reduced fees during this time. Bulbs four feet and under cost 50 cents to dispose of. Bulbs over four feet long, circular, u-shaped, and compact bulbs cost 75 cents each. HID lamps and broken fluorescents cost $2.00. Shatter shield fluorescent bulbs cost $2.50. UV and neon lamps cost $5.00.
Every year, Xcel Energy offers these reduced recycling fees in conjunction with Blue Earth County. Checks should be made out to “RRI.” To receive the free bulb disposal, Xcel Energy customers must bring a copy of a current bill with them to the disposal facility.
Fluorescent bulbs are required to be recycled because of the hazardous materials they contain, including mercury, which accumulates in the body and can cause serious health problems. When properly recycled, the mercury does not escape into the environment.
