The Minnesota Department of Corrections is hosting a “Ceremony of Remembrance” (1 p.m.) to honor Officer Joseph Gomm, who was killed by an inmate at the Stillwater prison one year ago today. Since Gomm’s death, 46-Stillwater officers have left and there are currently 26 openings. Minnesota Department of Corrections Commissioner Paul Schnell:

“These are really important and critical jobs to Minnesota’s public safety system. You know they are really core to helping get offenders in a position to come back to our communities better than they were when they went in.”

During the last legislative session, the DOC asked the legislature for 120 more corrections positions. It did approve 78, with 10 going to Stillwater.
