Recently, the Mankato City Council met in a three-hour work session to be updated on project feasibility underway for existing facilities, review proposals for new facilities and answer questions about a process to move forward.  City officials solicited proposals and facility needs by invitation to regional recreational groups and large facility owners.

Project updates on feasibility studies already underway for upgrades to existing recreational facilities included:

  • All Seasons Arena, 1251 Monks Avenue
  • Franklin Rogers Park, 601 Reed Street
  • Caledonia Community Center. 600 Hope Street
  • Community Athletic Fields co-located at Rosa Parks Elementary School, 1101 Heron Drive
  • Thomas Park, 100 Thomas Park Court
  • Tourtellotte Pool, 310 East Mabel Street

Proposals from those who responded to a questionnaire were reviewed:

  • Mankato Area Hockey Association
  • Mankato/North Mankato Youth Football
  • Mankato Area Youth Baseball
  • Mankato Area Girls Fastpitch Association
  • Mankato Pickleball Association
  • Mantas Swim Club
  • YMCA
  • Multi-Use Recreation Center

Beyond the consideration of sales tax for recreation projects, proposals have also been considered from:

  • Blue Earth County Historical Society
  • VINE Adult Community Center

Costs will be analyzed, including the ability to finance projects with sales tax grants, private donation matches and/or the issuance of future debt that would be repaid from sales tax.  Of key importance is also the feasibility of operations to ensure sustainability because operating costs are not eligible uses of sales tax.
