It’s been just over five years since medical marijuana became legal in Minnesota. The state’s two providers continue to operate in the red losing a combined 2.4 million in 2018. Dr. Jay Westwater, CEO of Minnesota Medical Solutions says right now there are currently 16-thousand active participants in the medical marijuana program. He says that number needs to grow to about 30-thousand before a manufacturer can turn a profit:

“We’re on our way there. We are incrementally growing. I think the commissioner of health does I think a good job about having a very medically oriented program that is safe… but the growth has been slow. We need more patients and we also need to make the medicines more affordable.”
