The Nicollet County Sheriff’s Office says a now-familiar scam is making the rounds in the area, particularly in Nicollet.

Chief Deputy Karl Jensen explained that someone is calling people claiming to be a law enforcement official and telling the victim that their child or grandchild is in trouble and needs money sent to a specific address.

In other calls, Jensen said the scammer claims to be the child or grandchild that is in trouble and often the caller claims to have a cold or sore throat to explain why they may not sound right.

The scammers also sometimes tell the person that they contact that they are to not speak with anyone for 24-48 hours, he said.

Jensen stressed that police will not call and ask for cash or gift cards to be sent to an address in order for someone to be released from custody and added that anyone that receives such a call should get in touch with police.
