A homeless man involved in a car-versus-pedestrian crash in Riverfront Drive in Mankato last week has been charged with car theft after police learned that he hadn’t returned a car he rented in July.
Police say 37-year-old Kenneth Burkeybyle was hit by a vehicle last Wednesday and was acting “very strange” afterward. He told investigators that he was hit just after opening his car door and his keys were missing. Police located them and the car Burkeybyle was driving and learned it was owned by Enterprise and had been reported stolen out of St. Paul.
When officers spoke to Burkeybyle at the hospital the criminal complaint shows he admitted that he’d stopped making the rental payments after he lost his job with a union. He also stated that he has occasionally been snorting methamphetamine and traveled to Mankato from the Cities the previous night to get away from people he thought were following him.
