The Martin County Sheriff’s Office is still looking for a man they say was released from the Minnesota Security Hospital in Saint Peter on a weekend pass more than a week ago and didn’t return.

Deputies say 50-year-old Phillip Horswell was committed as mentally ill and dangerous in 2010, after he was convicted of firing a gun at police officers in a cornfield near his home after a disturbance there. He claimed he wasn’t shooting at police but was test-firing the weapon to determine whether it had a broken pin.

An appeals court opinion upheld Horswell’s commitment and stated that before his arrest he was known to drive around with a shotgun in his vehicle and it was likely that he would commit future violent acts. Horswell continued to be committed at the time of his escape.

A warrant has been issued for his arrest on an escape charge.

Anyone with information about where he may be is asked to call 9-1-1.
